CHANDIGARH- February 12, 2010: Keeping in view the contributions in the field of Culture and Academics, Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College for Women, Kamalpura, Ludhiana conferred Dr. Surinder Sharma, retired Professor of Chemistry, PU, a veteran comedian of Punjabi films and now Advisor to the Vice-Chancellor for Culture and Academics a “Lifetime Achievement Award in the field of Art and Academics” during an Inter-College Art & Craft Festival called “Jashan-E-Baharan” on Thursday in the College Premises. Dr. S.M. Kant, Director Youth Welfare, Panjab University presided over the function.
Dr. Sharma has trained about 10000 students from schools, colleges and universities in the field of dance, drama, music, debates and other cultural activities for participation at Zonal, Inter-Zonal, Inter-Varsity and International level. He has brought large number of students on the right path by involving them in cultural activities. The students whom he has trained in various activities had got awards at national and international levels. He has utilized the energies of students in positive direction.
Dr. Surinder Sharma has represented country in festivals of India in USSR, UK as leader, dancer, singer and director. He has given more than 200 performances in USA, Canada and Gulf countries. At the age of about eight years, he has acted in the play for the first time and then at the age of 14 years, when he was studying in 10th Class, wrote and directed Anti-Dowry Play “Beti” and after that never looked back. He has directed so far more than 200 Plays and Acted in about 100 Plays like Oedipus, Antigony, Ashad-ka-Ek-Din, Kanchan Rang, Teen Fristey and so on.
In Academics, Dr. Surinder Sharma has more than 35 years experience of teaching in Chemistry and 30 years experience in research. His research papers were published in journals of international repute like Inorganic Chemistry and Polyhedron. He has been one of the best and loveable teachers. He has always teacher-taught relation with the students.
Dr. Surinder Sharma has acted in 70 Punjabi films as a comedian, nine Hindi films that include Karam with Rajesh Khanna, Khel Mquadar Ka, Bhakti Mein Shakti and number of plays to his credit. This versatile man has written scripts for Punjabi films, has penned a book, Samajdhar Log. His first comic break came with Punjabi movie Sat Sri Akal.
