Chandigarh : In view of the events across the country, especially the tragedy surrounding the death of the Delhi gang rape victim, the Chandigarh Press Club has decided cancel all festivities related to the beginning of New Year 2013. The decision was taken at the joint meeting of the club’s Governing Council and Advisory Committee after relevant feedback from the members.
To condole the tragedies and express the commitment of the journalistic fraternity to stand by the people during difficult times, the Club would organise a “candle lighting” ceremony. All members, their families and friends, who wish to reiterate their dedication towards following “zero tolerance” to injustice as well as crime against women and children, would participate in the event that begins in the club premises at 7:30 pm on December 31, 2012.
Underscoring the gravity of the situation, the club also decided to organise a seminar cum brain storming session in the first week of January, to chalk a strategy for the media to stand up against violations against the underprivileged sections of society and draw out an agenda to effectively deal with crime against women and children.
It is worth mentioning that the Chandigarh Press Club, over the years has remained vigilant and sensitive to issues related to discrimination based on gender. The Club’s Governing Council has renewed this commitment and assured to launch new initiatives in co-ordination with and for the benefit of the society at large.
