PASIGHAT, July 25: A team comprising district administration, police and forest officials launched a joint drive to evict unauthorized houses in Green-Belt (Reserve Forest) on Monday. The DM Onit Panyang informed out of 130 encroachers, 27 obtained stay order from the Hon’ble High Court, Guwahati and rest all 103 houses including RCC buildings were evicted successfully today. He informed that before starting the operation 144 CrPC was promulgated and appealed the encroacher to cooperate announcing in Hindi and local dialect repeatedly but the situation turned violent while a group of woman and youths restrained to march them towards the land. Some of the protesters including woman and youths tried to damage JCVs pelting stones and attacked magistrate and police personnel on duty, added Panyang. Left with no option police had to lob a teargas shell to disperse the mob that resorted to stone pelting. The DM also informed that one magistrate, one lady constable and four woman protesters were reportedly injured (minor) during the operation. He commented police and forest officials showing commendable courage made the drive successful.
