Chandigarh State TB cell, in association with School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh, organized a training for TB health visitors (TBHV) of Chandigarh on 11.12.2012 at State TB cell, Sector 34, Chandigarh. This training was organized as part of two year Zonal (North Zone) Task Force operational research project titled “Effectiveness of Smoking Cessation Intervention Package on Treatment Outcomes in Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients- A cluster randomized controlled trial” sanctioned to School of Public Health. TBHVs from different areas of Chandigarh attended the training. The project aims to study the effectiveness of a new intervention- the ABC intervention package for tobacco cessation among TB patients. Dr. Anil Garg, the State TB officer lectured on the association between TB and tobacco. Dr. Sonu Goel, Assistant Professor of Health Management, School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh introduced the project to the participants and also elaborated on the ABC intervention package for smoking cessation. The package was about how to Ask Tb patients about their exposure to tobacco smoke, to offer Brief advice to quit tobacco and provide them with Cessation support as need be. Dr. Jeyashree K, Senior Resident, School of Public Health, PGIMER trained the participants regarding the implementation of the project at their respective centres. The TBHVs actively participated in the training and obtained clarification on various issues related to tobacco and TB. The training concluded with a mock counseling session on how to counsel TB patients on tobacco cessation.
