PGI Faculty Farewell Committee bid farewell to four eminent professors of the Institute on their superannuation. The faculty from various departments gave a warm send off to Prof. Promila Pandhi (Pharmacology), Prof. Krishan Lal Khanduja (Bio-Physics), Prof. Krishan Kumar Kohli (Bio-Chemistry) and Prof. Birinder Nagi (Gastroenterology) in a function at Lecture Theatre-I today. Prof.Y.K.Chawla, Director PGI presided over the function and Prof.A.K.Utreja, Head, Department of Oral Health Sciences organized it. Dr. (Mrs.) Promila Pandhi was MD in Pharmacology from Rajasthan University, and DM in Clinical Pharmacology from PGIMER, after joining the Institute in 1981 as Tutor rose to become the Head of Pharmacology in December 2001.
She is Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences and Fellow American College of Clinical Pharmacology with more than 145 publications to her credit. Dr. Krishan Lal Khanduja did M.Sc. in Physics from Punjabi University and Diploma in Radiation Protection from BARC before joining PGIMER as Tutor in Biophysics in 1971. Subsequently he was selected for Indo-USSR fellowship, moved to Moscow and completed his Ph D on a unique topic of ‘Estimation of antioxidant capacity of biological samples’. After joining PGIMER as Tutor, he rose to be the Head of Biophysics in 1992. He has guided 28 Ph D theses and a number of DM/MD/MS theses.
With more than 150 research publications and six chapters in books he has passionately focused his research on cancer and antioxidants. Dr. Krishan Kumar Kohli after completing B.Sc and M.Sc Honors School in Biochemistry from Panjab University, Chandigarh moved to Delhi and completed Ph.D in Biochemistry from VPCI, University of Delhi. He was the Visiting Fellow to NIEHS, USA. After joining PGI as Assistant Professor; he rose to become Professor in 1999 and Head of Biochemistry on 1.10.2005. He is a member of a number of national and international societies including the Indian Philosophical Congress and New York Academy of Sciences and American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He has to his credit the introduction of automation in Emergency, Indoor and OPD Clinical Biochemical Labs of PGI and 55 research papers.
Dr. (Mrs.) Birinder Nagi did her MBBS from Patiala and MD in Radiodiagnosis from PGI and after joining PGIMER as Lecturer in Radiodiagnosis in 1975, she shifted to GE (Radiology) as Assistant Professor in 1983. She was awarded MNAMS in January 1992 and as Professor GE Radiology, she headed the Dept. of Gastroenterology from 2003 to 2006. Earlier she had worked as Registrar at Oxford University, UK for 12 months and as Siemens Scholar at the same University for 6 months. As an orthopedic radiologist she had a special interest in early diagnosis of tubercular lesions in bones and joints. She pioneered the technique of Japanese style double contrast barium examination.
