Talking on the increasing cases related to bone and joint problems in city, Dr Batth said that Osteomalacia, as it is called, was one such bone disease that usually people do not know they have it until it was too late. Osteomalacia usually revealed itself in aches and pain in lumbar region of the spine (lower back) or in the thighs.
He said , few decades back Osteomalacia was unheard of in India because patients used to expose themselves to sufficient sunlight. However, due to rapid urbanisation and changing lifestyles, the incidence of this disease was on rise. More people were staying indoors in the comforts of their home, office or cars. Those who ventured out use sunscreens liberally which also reduced Vitamin D formation, maintained Dr Batth.
Besides this Knee Osteoarthritis is a major public health challenge affecting millions of people in India. As a leading cause of disability, osteoarthritis (OA) was a complex, degenerative joint disease with several established risk factors, pointed out Dr Batth.
Expressing concerns over increasing number of Knee OA cases in Chandigarh & its suburbs, Dr Bath said that there has been a phenomenal increase in Knee OA cases owing to the increasing elderly population in this area. It was estimated that around 85% of population above 65 years of age was suffering from some kind of Knee Arthritis, informed Dr Batth.
