No Board exam for CBSE class X from 2011 : Kapil Sibal
7 Sep : In a path-breaking move that will cheer lakhs of students across the country, Govt on Monday announced that Class X examinations of the CBSE will be optional from the next academic year (2010-11) while the grading system will be introduced this year itself.
Over eight lakh students appearing for their class X exams in March 2010 have to take Board exams for which the results will be declared through grading system.
From 2011, the grading system will continue but the Board exams will become optional.
The Class X examinations of CBSE will be abolished from 2010-11 while the grading system will be introduced from 2009-10 (current academic year), Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters in New Delhi.
“After the Board examination is abolished in 2011 (for class X), students will have choice to take the Board exam on demand for transfer (to another school) or entry into pre-university institutes,” Sibal said.
The exam on demand is also available to students who want to continue in the same school, he said.
Under the new system, students who wish to continue in the same school after class X, need not take Board exam from 2011.
On the grading system, he said it will be a “continuous, comprehensive evaluation” which will be good for the students.
However, along with grades, students can also ask for their percentage.
No CBSE class X board exam from 2011 : Kapil Sibal
New Delhi, September 7 : Class X students of CBSE schools will be the last batch to compulsorily take the board examination for entering class XI this year, with HRD ministry today formally announcing the end of class X boards in all CBSE senior secondary schools from the next, 2010-2011 academic session. Secondary schools (up to class X) will, however, have an online or offline (as the student chooses) “on-demand” assessment option available at the end of class X to enable students acquire a board certificate for entering pre-university.
Senior secondary school students can also take this “on-demand” examination if he/she wants so, either for a transfer certificate or entry into some other state board school. The test will comprise GRE-type questions available online for students, including those who wish to improve their grades through the course of school instruction. The CBSE, however, is silent on how many “improvement options” a student will get.
A nine-point grading system will also be introduced for CBSE class X from this year. These grades, A1 (for grade point 10), A2 (for grade point nine), B1 (eight), B2 (seven), C1 (six), C2 (five), D (four), E1 and E2 will correspond to respective attributes and marks ranges – exceptional (91 to 100 per cent marks); excellent (81 to 90), very good (71 to 80), good (61 to 70), fair (51 to 60), average (41 to 50), below average (33 to 40); students with E1 grade (21 to 32 per cent marks) would be marked “need improvement”; those with E2 (marks ranging from 0 to 20 per cent) will be marked “unsatisfactory”.
Students with lowest grades will also be promoted to class XI, but will be required to improve their performance through two chances. “Students can know their marks/percentiles if they so wish,” HRD minister Kapil Sibal said today after a detailed presentation on examination reforms by CBSE chief Vineet Joshi.
In another development, the CBSE announced the introduction of continuous comprehensive evaluation (CCE) system for class IX students from October this year. This semester assessment will happen through two terms (April to September; October to March) and will comprise two formative (40 per cent of assessment) and one summative assessment (60 per cent).
“The CCE will cover all aspects of students’ development,” said Sibal. It will in effect rid the system of the stressful, annual examination tradition and “produce learners with greater skills”, says the ministry. The new assessment will cover a student’s for scholastic (curriculum-based) and co-scholastic skills including life skills, attitudes, physical and health-related merits.
CBSE’s document paper on examination reforms (in line with NCF 2005 suggestions) further debars schools from restricting CCE assessment of class IX students to paper-pencil tests. “Quizzes, group discussions, interviews, oral and visual tests, practicals will have to be designed for assessment,” said Joshi.
Summative assessment will happen at the end of each term, and will test students internally for curriculum and scheme of studies. For this, the schools will have to develop question papers based on the question bank the CBSE will send to them soon. “Pass percentage will remain 33,” Joshi said.
To settle the issue of subject selection, which, academics feel, will be hampered once the class X boards end, the CBSE plans to offer an “optional aptitude test” from February, 2010. It can be taken at the end of classes IX and X. “This test, along with the CCE certificate, will help students choose subjects suiting their aptitude,” Joshi said.
But the CBSE leaves many questions unanswered like how will a student taking the on-demand class X board examination enter a state board school if it takes newcomers only on the basis of exact percentiles; how will a student get streams of choice if several fall in the same grade and marks range?

I dunno about other students …. i was seriously a weak student myself …. the 10th board exam was useful for me in 12th because …. the topics are related (12th is the expansion of 10th)
if this ‘no board exam’ was applied by the govenment years ago….probably….i would have not give much effort in studyin (i would be tryin to get pass marks) and in 12th boards…would’ve got low marks.its good that it is optional….some people just cant do it….maybe something wrong in their life or sumthin….
sale
i am very sad as u have done this . actually this is not good for us as we are having more tension in our life as more work is there.
this will be very good for those students who want their life better,in present and future.
this not very bad. definitely. even though i’m an upper avergage student, this is bad as it is now going to give us a really hard time. better that i’m in for 10th 2010 boards ^_^
i don’t mind wheather the boards will take place or not… if it take place.. i will give them by heart and if not then that will be also ok……… but without boards the life is so relaxed and coooooooooool………… and i love it
itz just good[not excellent actually]as the students going to take E grade in 10th then he/she may fail in 11th and can do sumthin wrong..it is fine for me.
I AM AN STUDENT WITH 70-80% OF PERCENT…WHEN I CAME TO KNOW THAT CLASS XTH BOARD WILL BECOME OPTIONAL FROM ACEDEMIC YEAR 2010-2011 I WAS REALLY UNSATISFACTORY WITH THIS AS THE ABOLITION OF XTH BOARD XAMS WOULD EFFECT THE %ENTILE OF THE STUDENTS ….THOSE STUDENT WHO IMPROVE AFTER COMIN TO Xth BY THE FEAR THAT ITZ A BOARD XAM NOW THERE WILL BE NO FEAR..ND THEY WILL BE A FREE BIRD IN SKY…NOW IN THE COMIN DAYS..THERE WILL BE NO COMPETITION AS IT IS NOW….I REQUEST THE BOARD MEMBERS TO PLZ TAKE CARE OF OUR GRACEFULL WORDS…WHICH CAN HELP OUR JUNIORS..!THERE IS ATIME ND THE LAW CAN ALSO BE CHANGED NOW…!!!!
BUT..*IM HAPPY@ THAT WE ARE THE LUKY BATCH TO H’V BOARD EXAMS…BUT UNHAPPY WITH THE GRADING SYSTEM AS WE WILL NOT GET TO KNOW THE MARKS ND THERE WILL BE NO COMPETITION THE STUDENT WHO GETS 91 ND THE STUDENT THOSE WHO GET 100 R SAME THERE IS NO DIFFERNCE IN BOTH….THEY WILL BE CONSIDERED SAME..ND DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEIR KNOWLEDGE ND THEIR WEAKNESS WILL BE HIDDEN…!!!I ASK BOARD MEMBERS TO MENTION MARKS ALSO ALONG WITH THE GRADES…!!!!!!
I HOPE MY FAVOUR TO THE BOARD MEMBERS WLL BE FULLFILLED…..!!!
i am a student of class 9 n presently living in sultanpur{u.p} n shifting in bareilly due to some economical problems from class 10 so would i have to give board exam????
I think the decision of abolishing 10th class board exams is not right. The board exams create a fear in the mind of students that they have to study. Also this makes an idea in their mind about board exams and this finishes half of their fear about board exams and makes them ready for 12th class board exams. The idea of grading system is the worst system as the students who study will also think that there is no profit if study hard and so they will also not study.Kapil Sibbal is destroying our life by this bad decision.
well its a bit good for all of us idea of abolishing board papers but in reality board are a bit easy for all us and these exams are also not easy which schools give.hey, vaibhavi u cant blame anyone now…………
well i hope so u’ll get brilliant result this time .i wanna aSK A QUES. THAT IS MED. A BETTER OPTION FOR NEXT SESSION?
I have just cleared 9th class……I really feel that this system increases stress……..We have to study all year round and work hard for every small test!……..Boards were better as we get a lot of holidays for preparing….thus, easing the burden!
will marks be given if money is paid to the board????
i think boards shud be there
good work
i am not very about the decision.i felt that from our competitive it is not good.
it is better but can be made more better by little efforts
as the students and teachers still cant understand clearly this system
nobody knows the correcy sylabbus for class 10
i also confused about the sylabbus of FA1 AND FA2
its nice as students will concentrate more on studies rather than seeing nightmares of exams
Only,
these new changes had a great impact in my life. Moreover, my parents are taking a lot of panic. I am just getting helplesssssssssssss…………………………..?????????????????????
Well, its of course an experiment……but I don’t feel right with it……..once my school (private) introduced grading system in our school and it was a nightmare…….though I don’t think our juniors would be made to do all those rubbish work we did, still the very first thought that the grading system gives you is that studying is not all that important……..I mean students will give more time to sports and all that stuff and you know, everyone’s not an all-rounder……many won’t be able to cope with all that work……..I just wish good luck to all my juniors in class X!!!!!
No doubt, this new education reform of abolishing board is completely right, but it can be made perfect if govt. and school provide authentic and right information to the students of 10th class
As, it seems that we, whom on which experiment is applied, doesn’t know it’s A B AND C. we are blank!
if all the relevant information is provided to us, then their is no scope for us to panic….
SO PLZZZZZZZZZZZZ
10TH STUDENTS MUST KNOW ALL THE GUIDELINES REGARDING THE ABOLISHMENT OF BOARD!
thats nort good, u need to keep the boards ONNN! kapil sibbal sux!
We are not happy with the abolition of class -10 board exam bcoz it’ll decrease the competetive mind of toppers.
it is very bad plane many students and thire parent are wating for bord exam since 10 year and THE GUIDELINES is a very bad idea
I AM THE STUDENT OF CLASS 10 AND NOW THE RESULT OF CLASS 10 BOARD HAS DECLARED AND I HAVE SEEN THAT STUDENTS HAD SCORE TOO GOOD MARKS IN THEIR BOARD EXAMS ,EVEN THE WEAK STUDENTD HAD SCORE 60% TO 70% AND NOW I AM FEELING REALLY BAD THAT IN OUR TIME THE BOARD IS NOT THEIR.IN MONTH OF MAY ARE F1 HAS TAKEN PLACE WE HAVE GOT TOO MUCH BURDDEN ON OUR MIND WITH EXAMS WE ALSO HAVE TO MAKE PROJECT WORK AND PPT IN THIS ALL WE DIDN’T GOT TIME FOR STUDIES.SO, AT THE LAST I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT BOARD SHOULD BE THEIR THEN ONLY WE CAN ABLE TO MAKE ARE FUTURE BRIGHT SO, IT IS MY HUMBLE REQUEST TO CHANGE THIS SYSTEM.
PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ CHANGE THIS SYSTEM WE ALL STUDENTS WANT BOARD EXAMS. PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.
this new pattern exams are bringing tension .
thats not good u must keep public onnnnnnnn.
grading system is also not nice .

I agree wid you, shilpa…
CCE has created a lot of burden over the students…!!
WE
WANT
THE
PREVIOUS
SYSTEM,
BOARD!!!…!!!
Hai,I am Anand vijayan staying at Trivandrum. The new system of CBSE is a burden to the children because they are giving a heavy load of projects day by day.By doing this they don’t get the time for studying. The children are sleeping at late night because of these projects. This makes the children some health problems. The CBSE are telling that new system will decrease the tensions of the children, but the opposite are happening.By this heavy load of projects the child may increase his/her tension and may lead to mental depression. So i am concluding that CCE is a partial burden for children.
we need the previous system
its gud to knw dt henceforth there wud not be any class 10 board xmz in our cbse board.gud.but i hv a question.can anyone please clarify it??here it goes…. hw will the xm be conducted for the students who wants to change there school after class 10.???will they be allowed to sit for offline xm or is it compulsory that they hv to appear for onlyn test/??if .its onlyn, say complusory, then wt is the procedure to take the test???/
I feel that the class 10 exam has started a confusion in the minds of many students…i feel this is not correct
i am not very much satisfied with this new system after knowing wht the cce is i thought the board was better than this atlease we were not bounded by chains but this cce o my god every time we will be observed by our teacher’s for each and every thing we will be given a grade.we are not free to do anything. i dont know why this system has introduced it is like punishment for us.
I am 50% not satisfied with this new system….and i am really really fed up of creating project and the teachers are absorbing too.but if the teacher care for a particular student that means that student wall get more marks
sir, I’M IN CLASS Xth AND WANTS TO TAKE BOARD IN XTH , MY TEACHERS ARE NOT GIVING ANY INFO REGUARDING BOARD ,WILL I BE ASSESED AFTER TAKING BOARD [FORMATIVE ASSESMENT] .CAN I CONTINUE IN SAME SCHOOL AFTER TAKING BOARD I’M STUDYING IN DAV PUSHPANJALI PUBLIC SCHOOL PITAMPURA ENCLAVE.
TO THE,
Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal ,IT WAS THE RIGHT STEP TAKEN BY THE BOARD. BOARD EXAMS WAS NOT ONLY A TENSION TO THE PARENTS BUT A LOT OF LOAD PRESSURE ON THE CHILD WHO IS TO YOUNG TO TAKE IT. THIS IS THE TIME THE CHILD SHOULD LEARN MORE ABOUT THE WORLD AND ITS KNOWLEDGE.MY CHILD NEVER FOUND TIME TO READ SINCE THE SCHOOL WAS MORE INTO GETTING HIGHER PERCENTAGE FOR THE SCHOOL AND ITS RECORDS.NOW SINCE THERE IS A LOT OF PROJECT WORK MY SON TAKES A KEEN INTEREST IN READING AND GETS A LOTS OF KNOWLEDGE. ALSO FOR THE CHILD WHO AFTER THE 10TH LEAVES SCHOOL AND GOES IN TO DO SOME COURSE WHICH IS NOT ENOUGH 12TH MUST BE COMPULSARY FOR THE CHILD. SO I AM CONCLUDING THAT CCE is TAKEN THE RIGHT STEP.
well i dont like this grading system bcoz dis allows teachers to take their revenge on us . moreover how can we say it as stressbuster bcoz every 2 months there is a xam in our school in the name of cce. pls dont apply it on 12th exams
exams should not be abolished
hello my name is anuj i wanted to know that wheather cce is compulsory for each and every student of class 10th. pls tell me the online registration for class 10th cbse 2011 .
This whole cce thing is a complete crap. Can’t see anything good in it.The reasons for which i hate this darn system are:-
1)Teachers have a headache doing all the evaluation as if there is nothing for them to do other than pound their heads over corrections & assessments of all the students of 10th(around 60 in my school)throughout the year,i know because my mom’s a teacher.
2)I sit late at night trying just to finish the day to day portions,as if studying is the only thing i have to do.
3)Every day at school is a heart attack, teachers can come in any time & say “SURPRISE TEST STUDENTS”.
4)My stress level is just sky rocketing every single second i spend in school, as teachers assess me in every category. So i am forced to do every single thing in school with perfection or risk losing grades.(As if they consider me as a robot or something)
5)Do you have any idea how much amount of paper we have been
wasting doing all those rubbish assignments & projects?(About 50 every month)
6)There is no stability, i mean i just don’t know what to do,i am changing my school next year,so some teachers tell i have to write the board exam, some say “Nahh, not required, just be cool(as if i can)”& my friends say “Man this whole thing is shit,we have to write both the board exams & the “submative” exams”.So i don’t whats happening,& there is utter confusion.
7)Not going to help us prepare for exams like iit, aieee etc.
So in simple terms”CHANGE THE CCE SYSTEM”.
poem-
The system has bought hell upon us,
All the students are making a big fuss,
Everyday is a heart attack,
And my head is starting to crack.
Can’t even get time to take a breath,
I think this my last breath,
Now is the time to act,
This is our grim reality & this is a fact.
Hope the change comes in this hopeless system.
I think the new cce system is good for nstudents as it is a continuous and comprehensive evaluation. students who are weak can also score their marks. But fgor the admission in class 11 we have to give an applitude test where we will be provided with the streams.
hy guys ……m nt at all hapi wid optional board or cce patern couse i think our educational ministr did easy our scul lyf bt nt d lyf ….he nt understanding dat it is gud for scul time only…. bt nt 4 d lyf time wen v pass our 10,,, wt else happen st failed in 11 so wts d use of it …so m nt at all hapi …..as m week st ok my class….agr krna hi tha to luf easy kr k dikhao na …den u r d best education ministr……sry 4 hash wordin
I AM A STUDENT OF CLASS 10. I AM VERY SAD BECAUSE THERE IS NO BOARD IN TENTH CLASS.I AM A INTELLIGENT STUDENT BUT HOW I CAN SHOW MY PERFORMANCE .KAPIL SIBAL IS NOT GOOD FOR ME .
cce has made our life more miserable.
kapil sibal- if you want to do anything good for the students lessen the burden of homework on students.
this cce is really rubish
its a hard time for rankers like me
I want the old cbse pattern to retourn back
its really disappointing.I mean this grading system is good for average students.moreover it is going to bring a student having 80 marks and the other having 90 in the same zone. i am still finding hard to understand the reason for abolishing class 10 board exams.
wat d hell.FA is killing me .pls sir remove dis system or students suicide will increase more and u will be d responsible.
