14 Nov : The nation pays tribute to the first Prime Minister of India Pt Jawaharlal Nehru on his 121st Birth anniversary today even this day also celebrated across the country as Children’s day.
A series of functions are being organised across the country to mark the occasion.
In the national capital, an all religion prayer meeting has been held at his memorial Shanti Van on Sunday morning.
The day is also observed as the ‘Children’s Day’ in India as Pandit Nehru had great affection for children. They fondly called him ‘Chacha’ Nehru.
Celebrating Children”s Day is about giving children the right to enjoy and grow into healthy and educated citizens of the country.
All around the country, functions are organized in the schools or in societies and children participate in poetry, drawing competition etc.
Prominent freedom fighter, thinker, statesman, world leader and the foremost builder of modern India, Nehru’s contributions to the nation and the world are invaluable.
A pivotal figure in the Indian independence movement, Nehru was born on 14th November 1889 in Allahabad.
He was also a key figure in international politics in the post-war period, and was one of the founding figures of the non-aligned movement.
Nehru graduated from Cambridge University, and returned to India in 1912. Popularly referred to as Panditji, Nehru was also a writer, scholar and amateur historian.
The son of the wealthy Indian barrister and politician Motilal Nehru, Nehru had become one of the youngest leaders of the Indian National Congress.
After independence, Nehru served as India’s first Prime Minister from August 1947 to May 1964.
TN Governor garlands statue of Nehru
In Chennai, Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala and other freedom fighters garlanded the statue of Pt Nehru.The Governor and his wife Surjit Kaur distributed sweets to the children of staff of Raj Bhavan Barnala’s son Gaganjit Singh Barnala, daughter-in-law Harpreet Kaur, Grandsons Simmer and Abhay, and other officials were also present on the occasion, a press release from Raj Bhavan said.
