Chandigarh, September 28:- Over 200 officers and staff of the MC Chandigarh, including those from the Sanitation Department, Horticulture Department, B&R Department, undertook a cleanliness drive within the large campus of Panjab University and the areas of Sector 14, 15, 16 & 17 led by Municipal Commissioner Sh V.P.Singh, IAS and area Councillor Saurabh Joshi in the initiative.
During the launch programme, Professor Arun Kumar Grover, Vice Chancellor, Punjab University, Smt. Heera Negi, Senior Deputy Mayor, Sh. Rajiv Gupta, Joint Commissioner, Sh. Mukesh Anand, Chief Engineer, Dr. P.S. Bhatti, Medical Officer of Health, Senate Member Prof Dinesh Talwar, Senate Member Prof Keshav Malhotra, Senate Member Deepak Kaushik, Senate Member Prof Tankeshwar Kumar, HOD Prof Sukesh Manav, HOD Prof Baijnath Prasad and other professors and non-teaching staff of Punjab University and officers of Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh. The cleanliness drive has been initiated in different blocks of residential and departments of Panjab University and this drive will continue till October, 25, 2014.
During the launch of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, in PU Campus, the VC appreciated the efforts of Municipal Corporation and also suggested to initiate this drive in various colleges and other educational institutions to ensure that the programme is sustained in a “befitting” manner and the campuses are kept clean.
He said that we should also roll out schemes on national initiatives for fostering social responsibility in the campuses and set guidelines for the establishment of a centre for fostering social responsibility and community engagement in universities.
Laying emphasis on the sustenance of the programme, Sh. V.P. Singh, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation said that all concerned may be requested to keep the academic, administrative and residential area in a neat condition. Teaching spaces should have a positive ambience for students and playgrounds and open spaces should be kept in neat and clean conditions. Besides, drinking water supplies and storage facilities in both academic and residential blocks should be kept clean and inspected on regular basis, he added.
He said that The Municipal Corporation has an important role to play in order to make the Swachchha Bharat mission a mass movement by reaching out to people with right content and effective messaging. Whereas, it is the equal duty of each and every resident of the city to keep their household and surroundings clean.
He said that Municipal Corporation has taken up this Abhiyan as a movement to solve the sanitation problems, ensure waste management and make India a clean country, with total hygiene. The Corporation has prepared a plan to keep all its offices/properties and sites in a neat and tidy manner and also to provide clean toilets and planning of constructing new toilets in the in the necessary areas and improve the existing ones.
He said that to effectively observe the Swachchha Bharat Abhiyan, the Municipal Corporation will organise focused programmes like local/ward level awareness programmes, media campaigns, art/literacy competitions etc. To educate people about the importance of sanitation and the indirect cost to the public from neglecting sanitation in the form of ill-health, loss of work and cost towards medical treatment.
The Municipal Corporation removed garbage, horticulture waste and malba by deploying extra tractor trolleys, road sweeping machines and front end loaders. In addition to that stray dogs in the University campus were also captured by the Dog Squad for sterilization.
IEC activities were also conducted at Sector 17 Chuttani Medical Centre where views of general public were also taken. Public Announcements were made for creating an atmosphere to keep the City neat and clean and free of garbage.
