Jalandhar’s Surbhi Jyoti has bagged the role of a Muslim girl ZOYA in Zee TV’s upcoming show `Qubool Hai.’ Surbhi is not new to the entertainment industry despite Qubool Hai being her debut on Hindi television. The spunky Punjabi kudi from Jalandhar, she is a very popular face in Punjab and on Punjabi television. With a background in theatre, Surbhi has also played the lead roles in a superhit Punjabi movie, ‘Raula Pai Gaya’ and a soap, ‘KACH DIYAN WANGAN on ZETC Punjabi alngwith being the anchor of many shows.
Zee TV’s upcoming offering, ‘QUBOOL HAI’, presents an inter-generational family saga set in the Muslim milieu! It explores the lives of three individuals (Zoya, Ayan and Asad) who are starkly different from each other and yet their lives are beautifully entwined by the threads of destiny. Zoya is a modern, vibrant, new- age girl who questions stereotypes. Ayan, is a happy-go-lucky boy without a care in the world. And the angry young man, Asad’s sole purpose in life is to become successful. It is not often that viewers get a slice of Urdu-speaking people’s life on television. Qubool Hai is a mixture of drama and romance showcasing Muslim culture and values in a modern setting.
Talking about the aim of the show, producer Gul Khan of Four Lions Productions said, “With Qubool Hai, I want to remove misconceptions regarding Islam in the minds of people. There are many myths like women don’t have rights in Muslim families, they don’t get proper education, etc. But I want to showcase, among many other things, that women in Islam have equal rights as men to get educated. It is a refreshing story that revolves around the life of a progressive Muslim girl and a modern Muslim family. The protagonist Zoya, is an intelligent young girl who derives her strength from the Holy Quran. The show highlights empowerment of women in Muslim society.”
The show introduces the vivacious Surbhi Jyoti as a lead protagonist, Zoya.
Surbhi says, “I have to say that Zoya’s character is a dream role for me. I couldn’t have asked for a better launch pad. There are far too many similarities between Zoya and me. Both are talkative and come across as the ‘girl next door’ with no frills, tensions or complications yet deep within we are both serious, opinionated and have strong views on subjects that are close to our hearts. The biggest similarity between Zoya and me is truly amazing! We are both ardent cricket fans. I remember my entire family watching serials on TV while I would watch cricket in my room. I know more about cricket than most other guys.”
Surbhi had to go through the entire casting rigmarole – screen test, audition and look test to bag the lead role. “We had endless meetings discussing the finer nuances of the character including getting the Urdu diction and dialogue delivery right. Though my educational background, Masters in English, helped me understand phonetics and pick up the intonation rather quickly. I have been a champion debater in college…so, needless to say, being talkative or argumentative comes naturally to me,” says the attractive actor with a twinkle in her eyes.
Dearest Ms. Surbhi Jyoti,
Namaste !
I respect you as my daughter that you have won the classical world as a good dancer. You know- I am the regular commenter of Zee TV. You should convince to all, Hindu and Muslim are same, but Christians are our enemy only. We should join our hands among us.
In the context of Nepal, if you want to know the reality between Hindu and Muslim you will find the cordiality between Hinu-Nepalese ns Mislim. We can see two mosques- Jame and Kashmiri near by Hindu King’s palace in Kathmandu which was erected in 1743 (1800 BS). King Prithvi Narayan Shah had visited Benaras for the devotion of Lord Vishwonath. At that time he purchased some weapons and he returned back by bringing Muslims artisans to safeguard the small Hindu Kingdoms. When Prithvi Narayan Shah conquered Kathmandu, the King had given recognition to the mosques that had already existed. Prithvi Narayan Shah had contributed the unification of Big-Nepal from Tista to Kangada. Let it be the history of East India Company’s war with Nepal where the Nepalese land was captured in1816.
After signing the Sugauli Treaty in 1857, the land from Rapti to Mahakali was lost which was again returned back latter as a “Naya Muluk. “. Rana Prime Minister Junga Bahadur invited Muslims from Lucknow to reside in Nepalgunj which was almost a forest area. So Muslims of this nation are known to be a patriotic force. When Nepal was a Hindu nation Muslims’ were not dissatisfied and who neither were been against nor will never be against the nation. Hindus had not harbored any prejudice against Muslim and they were free to recognize their religion. In the world such a harmonious co-existence between Muslim and Hindu is exemplary. However, in India Hindu and Muslim has indulged in emotional wars from the very beginning.
After unification, Nepal feared attack from the British forces. And Muslim Emperor Nawab Bajir of Lucknow pledged support to Nepal in case a war broke out between Nepal and the East India Company. Later when the Anglo-Nepal war did break out in 1815, but the Muslim Emperor Bajir Shah lent his support to the British Empire. And then, in 1857 British sought help of Nepal against Muslim empire. The PM of Nepal Junga Bahadur with a seething temper for revenge quelled the Muslim forces.
History is the witness of peaceful and harmonious living of the Nepali Hindus and Muslims. Unlike India, Nepali Hindus are very much tolerant towards diverse beliefs. Nevertheless in the manner some prominent nationalist Muslim leaders are being targeted and killed in series—is the clear indication that external inimical forces want also to disturb existing religious communal harmony as they did so to Nepali politics in the recent past. These are the words of a Muslim leader who actively participated in a two hour long traffic stoppage—making mess of city traffic, organized as a mark of protest in the heart of capital Kathmandu against government’s nonchalant attitude towards bringing to book those criminals involved in the killing of community leader Faizan Ahmed (40) told in the condition of anonymity. Broad day light killings of leader Mirza Dil Shad Beg and media entrepreneur Jamim Shah and attempted murder of Yunus Ansari- another media entrepreneur right inside the guarded (?) Central prison is the indication that Nepal will soon turn into a grave yard for the Nepalese Muslim community,” the Muslim leader further commented. But it is different in India because the starting of Hindus and Muslim was bad. As a Nepalese, I support your smart art and energetic activities. Please go on.
Thank you.
