BY ANKUR VADHERA CHANDIGARH : The students of Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology, Sector 26, Chandigarh with their full strength went on strike starting from 8th Oct, 2012. A united front was shown by the students and slogans demanding immediate action were raised. The students voiced the issue of incompetence and lack of willingness on the part of the authorities in completing their duties.
The main issues raised were ineffective Training and Placement Cell, poor college infrastructure and hostel facilities. Students asked the authorities to provide explanation as to why the funds collected from the students for various facilities were not properly utilized. Among the various funds collected for alumni, sports, training and placement etc. amount to an approx value of 49 lakhs every year, in contrast to which the facilities available are dismal. Few months ago also, lecturers from the same college protested for some of their demands against the principal.
Despite of the alumni fund collected, the college has seen only one convocation since its inception. In this time seven batches have graduated from the college. Also, no college Alumni Association is maintained. Similarly, the college’s annual fest lies in doubt as the paper work is not being completed by the officials. The students told that no proper sports facilities are available. No funds are sanctioned to the teams representing the college in various technical, cultural and sports competitions held in other colleges.
The infrastructure available is poor. The laboratory equipments do not function properly due to which the practical study time is wasted. Furthermore, the projectors in the lecture halls are either missing or not in working state.
The authorities had no answer and excused themselves by mentioning their future plans and transferring the blame to Chandigarh administration. In response to this the students demanded intervention of the Chandigarh Administration.
