Patiala, Aug 29- Punjabi University, Patiala’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof B.S. Ghuman received the coveted Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) trophy from the President, Mr Ram Nath Kovind in the Rashtarpati Bhawan here today. He was accompanied by Director, Sports of the University, Dr Gurdeep Kaur Randhawa. The University has won this trophy for the 10th time, thus entering double figures, including 6th time in-a-row by mustering 89,635 points for the year 2016-17. More significant is the fact that the tally is 4,740 points more than 84,895 points scored by the University last year. It amounted to pushing Panjab University, Chandigarh and GNDU, Amritsar to the second and third spots, respectively.
Talking to Director, Media Centre of the University, Prof Gurmeet Singh Maan over mobile from Delhi, Prof Ghuman said that the laurels belong to the entire fraternity of the Punjabi University, especially the dedicated sports persons, their coaches, functionaries and all the officials engaged in the act. The Principals of different colleges, affiliated to the University also deserve special praise, he said.
His effort, he said, now will be “to spread the sports culture among maximum number of youth enabling Punjab to regain its glory at the international level. Prof. B.S. Ghuman further said that it was a moment of sheer gratification and fulfillment for me to be a witness to the excellent achievement of the University, happening just after taking the reins of this premier institute of higher learning. He said that while it would act as a source of great inspiration and motivation to our sports fraternity, it would also enhance the quantum of challenge for us in future to maintain and sustain this honour. “I would also ensure to pay special attention for improving the sports infrastructure for attracting and retaining the best of the sports talent in the country,” Prof Ghuman added.
