Chandigarh—Under the road map of Chandigarh Health Department for eradication of Dengue, as many as 56 NSS volunteers of Panjab University (PU) campus participated in the Dengue awareness and eradication campaign at village Dhanas here on Thursday.
PU NSS Programme Coordinator, Prof. Yograj Angrish flagged off the team for the Dengue awareness and survey at Dhanas. The team was led by Jeesu Jaskanwar Singh (Programme Officer) and Sandeep Kaur (student coordinator) and Sudarshan Bhatt from U.T. Health department.
The NSS volunteers were guided by the U.T. health department regarding door to door survey and awareness activities about dengue. The NSS volunteers covered approximately 1700 households. They checked the desert water coolers, Overhead water tanks, discarded tyres and containers, buildings under construction for stagnant water and larvae of Culex and Aedes mosquito. They also distributed the educational pamphlets describe the life cycle of Aedes mosquito.
Under optimal conditions, the egg of an Aedes mosquito can hatch into a larva in less than a day. They informed the residents that Aedes mosquito’s larva takes approximately four days to develop into a pupa, after two days adult mosquito emerge and can spread the virus responsible for Dengue fever.
The target of 100 percent given by health department was achieved at EWS Colony, Chaman Colony, Ambedkar colony and Kabristan colony in Milk Colony. The survey at milk colony and Dhanas village would be completed in the next 2-3 days, the programme officer.
The NSS volunteers also found one case of Aedes mosquitoe larvae growing in one household and health department officials issued challan/ notice for the same. Besides that few patients with suspected case of dengue or malaria were found during the survey having high fever. They were motivated and informed to undergo the tests for malaria and dengue at the nearby Govt. Dispensary of Dhanas. The health department officials were also informed about the suspected vector borne disease cases from the houses visited.
