Test fire of Advanced Air Defence interceptor missile postponed

14 Mar :  Test-fire of India’s indigenously built Advanced Air Defence (AAD) interceptor missile, capable of destroying hostile in-coming ballistic missiles, was postponed today at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Wheeler Island off the Orissa’s east coast.
The trial, scheduled for the day, was postponed due to some technical snag in the sub-system at the Wheeler Island and there was no problem with the missiles, official sources said.

The Government has signed a contract for upgrade of the MiG-29 aircraft with M/s Russian Aircraft Corporation (RAC MiG) on March 07, 2008. The total cost of the contract is USD 964,082,937.46. The MiG-29 aircraft upgrade is planned in two phases namely Design & Development phase in Russia followed by series upgrade in India.
The Government has signed a contract for ugpradation of AN-32 aircraft with M/s Spets Techno Export, Ukraine on June 15, 2009.

IAF carries out fire power exercise using frontline aircraft

1 March : Showcasing its precision strike capabilities during day and night, Indian Air Force on Sunday carried out a massive fire power blitzkrieg using its frontline aircraft such as SU-30 MKI, Mirage-2000, MIG 27 and MIG 29, at the Pokhran ranges in Rajasthan.
The high-voltage exercise ‘Vayu Shakti’, witnessed by President Pratibha Patil, Defence Minister A K Antony and a host of foreign dignitaries, showcased massive bombing, aerial dog fight and day-night air drop of commandos in the Thar desert.

17 armymen killed in Kashmir avalanche

8 Feb : In the worst-ever snowslide in recent years in Kashmir, 17 soldiers were killed and an equal number injured when an avalanche slammed into them during their winter warfare training on steep slopes of a ski resort, 70-km from Srinagar, on Monday.
The avalanche came hurtling down on the 60-strong combat troops as they were scaling the icy walls of high-altitude Khilanmarg peak in near zero visibility, police and army said.

India successfully test-fires nuclear-capable Agni-III missile

7 Feb : India on Sunday successfully test-fired its indigenous Agni-III ballistic missile with a range of 3500 kms from the Wheeler Island off the coast of Orissa, making the nuclear-capable platform ready for induction into the armed forces.
“The fourth test-firing of the Agni-III missile was carried out at 1050 hours on Sunday. It was for the full range and it hit the target with pin-point accuracy and met all the mission objectives,” Defence Ministry spokesman Sitanshu Kar said.
