10 May : Metro train services on Indraprastha-Yamuna Bank stretch of Delhi Metro began on Sunday as the first train chugged into the newly-constructed Yamuna Bank station in East Delhi.
The 2.1 km section, which is an extension of line III (Dwarka Sector 9-Indraprastha) was open to public without any official inauguration as the Model Code of Conduct is still in force."The opening of this small stretch is a significant step for further sections of the phase II of the Delhi Metro as the new Yamuna Bank station will also facilitate the Anand Vihar-ISBT corridor and the Noida corridor," DMRC managing director E Sreedharan told reporters.
"The new station will be an interchange station for the two corridors which will have trains diverging from this point," he said.Rubbishing the claim of environmentalists that the opening of the new stretch will endanger the water level of Yamuna, Sreedharan said DMRC has taken all the necessary steps to ensure that the polluted water does not get into the river.
"DMRC has taken into account all the environmental concern while carrying out the construction into the Yamuna river bed area. We have taken all the necessary steps," he said.
