Is it enough that the scientific temper should keep catapulting man to explore Milky Way and perform a rare feat of “space walk” while still toddling on Earth? Will it suffice if we master the laws of physics while tending to unlearn the chemistry of love and inter-human relationship?
What a predicament! Love, that binds two individuals, is beginning to be spurious. Consequently, the warp and woof of the societal fiber is in tatters beyond repair. History, however, is a witness that the situation whenever turns raggedy, master weavers in the form of Buddha, Mahaveer or Mother Teresa emerge to restyle the fabric. And so does Sri Sathya Sai Baba whose 84th birthday falls on November 23rd!
Who is Sri Sathya Sai Baba? Is he God or a Godman or a missionary or an imposter? “What is Sri Sathya Sai Baba?” is, however, more relevant than “Who is Sri Sathya Sai Baba?”
Confronted by a direct bouncer “Is Baba God?” during a workshop on “Science & Spirituality” which I also attended as a student, an Indian nuclear scientist ducked it saying that it would depend on how one receives Baba. “For me, he is God; some may acknowledge him as a saint while others may look upon him as an ordinary man. But he is surely then a man with a mission so gigantic to accomplish!” he quipped.
In 114 countries in the world today, Baba is hailed as an apostle of love. “Love all-Serve all” and “Hands that serve are holier than the lips that pray” epitomize the basic philosophy of one of the greatest legends, Sri Sathya Sai.
Come November! Descend resonant celebrations in Prashanthi Nilayam, the abode of highest peace, where Baba resides! Truly, “the Indian Vatican”, has emerged as the epicenter of spiritual renaissance, on the world map.
True to his declaration “My Life is My Message”, he continues to stir and inspire millions of his followers to turn role-model ambassadors in his “dharam sthapana” movement.
Baba is an integral manifestation who combines two very significant roles.
Firstly, he is a great spiritual giant, famed for his simple exposition of spiritual truths which constitute the elemental teachings of all religions of the world. Elucidating on his mission, Baba declares that “I have come not to disturb or destroy any faith, but to make each one of you steady in your own faith, so that the Christian becomes a better Christian, the Muslim a better Muslim and the Hindu a better Hindu”.
Secondly, Baba is an inexhaustible reservoir of pure love who tries to kindle the ‘lamp of love’ in our heart. Professor Frank Baranowski, a regression therapist and bio-magnetic specialist from Arizona University, who captured the radiations of various hues, flowing from Baba’s persona, with ‘Kirlian’ camera, declared him as “LOVE” walking on two feet.
Crystallizing his secularity, Baba proclaims that there is only one caste-caste of humanity; there is only one religion-religion of love; there is only one language-language of heart and there is only one God & He is omnipresent.
Baba has prescribed a five-fold dictum of truth, righteousness, peace, love and non-violence for making life more meaningful. To attain excellence of these eternal values blooming on corresponding levels of human personality, namely, physical, intellectual, emotional, psychic and spiritual, is the prime objective of every human being.
This capsule forms an integral part of the formatted curriculum “Educare” meant for the school-goers combined with weekend “bal vikas” tutorials.
Baba cautions that “Education in Human Values” is not a separate subject as most educationists generally conceptualize. The teachers should rather cull these values from their respective subjects where these are lying ingrained.
Upholding “the end of education is character”, Baba has established a chain of model educational institutions, which include primary and secondary schools, colleges and an accredited university with three campuses offering undergraduate, Masters, and Ph.D. degrees in all streams without any fee whatsoever.
In addition to emphasizing the pursuit of academic excellence, Baba’s “integral education” patterned in “gurukul” mode is designed to foster self-discipline and pro-social conduct. The objective is to facilitate the students to “learn self-sacrifice” & “earn self-realization”.
The accreditation certificate granted by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council to Sri Sathya Sai University adores it “as a crest-jewel among the universities worthy of emulation” by educational institutions in the country and elsewhere.
To render service in a structured manner, Baba founded Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organization in 1967 which has now grown with over 1,200 centers in 114 countries. I have found the organization truly spiritual with secular credentials. Members undertake periodical group service activities, such as, Healthcare, Educare, Eco-care, Aqua-care, Air-care, Socio-care and free coaching under Village Integration Program, that directly benefit the less privileged strata.
The objective is to groom a volunteer to slay his ego and experience divinity inherent in him. Sai Centers, therefore, signify a spiritual cascade that keeps the followers afloat as a well-knit cluster.
What Baba is doing is indeed phenomenal! He succeeds where even the Government fails, be it water supply in 750 barren villages of Andhra known for geographical hostility or 200-kilometers long Sai canal for Chennai or construction of concrete dwelling units for cyclone-hit victims in Orissa. Or, two Super Specialty Hospitals at Prashanti Nilayam and Bangalore where state-of-art medical facilities are offered absolutely free by eminent surgeons and medicos.
By seeing the enormity of the task for the teeming humanity, which no individual or an NGO has even visualized achieving; one is led to believe that Baba is a one-man army!
Baba inspires his followers to reach out to the poorest of the poor and import smile on their face by “wiping every tear from every eye” as idealized by Mahatma Gandhi. This concept has been described as “spiritual socialism” by critic-turned-believer R. K. Karanjia in his book “God Lives in India”!
Baba has re-defined the psychology of human personality; chemistry of human rhythm; physics of “gravitational” force of love; sociology of inter-human contours and philosophy of life. In Karanjia’s words, Baba is a scientist of consciousness par excellence! He tends to awaken the conscience of mankind with a view to usher in an era oozing with love, where all humans turn humane.
It is irrelevant to indulge in a non-ending debate whether Baba is God or not. There is no need either. But nobody would ever be able to counter what Baba does for redeeming the mankind is surely godly!

I fell in love with him when I visited him with the author of this article Ashok Kumar Yadav way back in 1988 during my posting as a journalist at Karnal where Yadav was posted as City Magistrate. He initiated me to spiritualism and we continue to be friends ever since.
I have found you can achieve what appears immpossible if Sri Sathya Sai Baba wills it. Perhaps the only precondition is total surrender, total faith and trust in Him. Once you demand something from him or want him to do something for you and the prayer comes from the core of your heart, nothing is impossible then. I and my family have tried it. Before i am able to say anything about the most unique experience of my life that is “Sai Experience”, i share with you what a famous scientist of the World has said about Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
Professor Frank Baranowski, a psychologist and regression therapist, specializes in research on auras, the energy patterns that surround all living beings, and works at the university of Arizona. He is an expert in bio-magnetic field radiation photography. He has photographed and interpreted the auras for numerous men and women using the ultra-sensitive Kirlian camera.
Professor Baranowski had read several books about Sri Sathya Sai Baba, including Samuel Sandweiss’s “Sai Baba, the Holy man and the Psychiatrist.” He wondered whether such a person could really exist and whether all that was written about him was factual. As he was, at that time, writing a book on reincarnation based on case studies and other findings, he was interested in Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s claim of being a reincarnation of Shirdi Sai Baba.Now, I have always been able to see the human aura. The auras around average people extend as much as three to five feet. Auras are composed of every imaginable colour and these colours change as a person’s emotional, physical and mental states change. In general, whenever the colour blue is evident in a person’s aura, it is an indication of deep spirituality; green is a healing color; yellow indicates high intelligence; and red means anger or frustration.
The colour pink, which is rarely seen, typifies a person capable of selfless love, and this was the colour that Sathya Sai Baba had around Him. The aura around Sathya Sai Baba went beyond the building reaching thirty or forty feet in all directions. Never having seen any aura like this before, my first reaction was to look for fluorescent lights, which may have been shining on Him. But as I watched, the beautiful pink energy pattern moved as He moved; there was no doubt that this was His aura.
“Perhaps of all the miracles I witnessed in my ten days in India, no miracle is as great as the miracle of one man giving so much love to so many people. In my estimation and experimentation, Sri Sathya Sai Baba is, aura-wise, exactly what He says He is and what He asks everyone to be. He is love, pure and simple. He is love walking on two legs. Such unselfish love is nothing other than Divinity.”
i had the greatest good fortune of studying in Sri Sathya Sai University’s MBA programme, as its first batch student 1986-88. while i had close, proximate and intimate experiences with Baba, something i could never forget in my life was the simplicity with which Baba would convey His Message, to redeem and transform us.
on August 17th, 1988, the day i was to come back after finishing my education, Sai Baba held my hands in His, and asked me, “What is that you could give me in return, for your education at this University?”. i naturally replied, “Anything Baba, i could give anything”. He looked into my eyes and placed His Hand on His Forehead and told me, “Do not bring bad name to Me, be pure, live simple and work selflessly for humanity, and bring good name to your parents, nation and Me”. the message always remains fresh in my heart. Sai Baba, is not merely God Incarnate, but He is God Himself. i have experienced it personally and so also have millions around the Globe. The proof of sweetness in the sugar lies in tasting it. So also Divinity of Sai Baba, needs no words to prove it. We have to undergo the experience. Those who say a thousand things, but do not experience, do not know what they are talking about, is all that i say about them. The only mode of devotion prescribed by Sai Baba is “transformation” ie becoming a better and still better individual. This He expects and achieves through His Message. Let us ourselves experience this unique Mission, and then share to the world, about what we have lived.

I was doing job in New Zealand in 1997 then i saw that most of the New Zealand people visit India only for Sai Baba. I was surprised that i am Indian and not aware about Sai Baba. They tell me about HIS miracle and free services for Education and Medical Science.But Now Ashok Yadav’s article in your paper open my eyes about Sai Baba. Yes he is really God.
