Jan Aushadhi Generic Drug Store open at PGIMER

16 Nov : The first ‘Jan Aushadhi’ 24×7 Generic Drug Store in U.T. Chandigarh, at PGIMER was inaugurated by Dr. Ajay Sehgal, Dy. Director (Admn.), PGI on Monday, the 16th November 2009 at 11.30 A.M. in the Old Shopping Centre (behind Oral Health Science Block), Nehru Hospital, PGI, Chandigarh.   Dr. A.K. Gupta, Medical Superintendent, Sh. J.R. Garg, S.H.E. and other senior officers of the Institute were also present on the occasion.

The PGI has provided rent free shop and infrastructure for setting up of the drug store.  The ‘Jan Aushadhi’ generic drug store at PGI will be managed by the Hindustan Antibiotics Ltd. as per the scheme and guidelines of Bureau of Pharma (BPPI) for generic drug stores in India.

The ‘Jan Aushadhi’ generic drug stores is an initiative of the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Govt. of India being set up with the objective to provide cheaper unbranded generic medicines to the vast population of poor people in India, who finds it extremely difficult to afford branded medicines.  A comparison of a few medicines sold by the Jan Aushadhi and their market rate is as under:
